Our Referral Policy: What To Expect For Your Client and Patient

Our goal is to be an integral part of your patient’s care team through pain management and rehabilitation therapy. We strongly believe in a multimodal and individualized approach to every patient to meet their needs. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Evaluation of the patient’s musculoskeletal, neurological systems as well as the strength and functionality through palpation, objective measurements, and assessment of outcome goals.
  • Development of a treatment plan based on owner’s goals, patient’s ability/condition, and owner’s preferences for follow up/home program.
  • Discussion of surgical and non-surgical/conservative approaches to the pet’s condition.
  • Education on different pain management options including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, intra-articular therapy (PRP, stem cell, steroid/HA, Synovetin OA ®). The client will be encouraged to obtain refills through their current method but in the case of medications not being available at their primary veterinarian, they may be offered to obtain the medication at our facility.
  • Counseling and fitting for assistive devices (wheelchairs, harnesses), orthotics/braces or referral for advanced orthotic fitting.
  • Advice for a weight loss plan that may include diet changes where appropriate. Every effort will be taken to encourage weight loss on current diet but in some cases, a diet change may be recommended, and this will be communicated to you via a summary letter.

To be able to provide the best therapeutic plan, a clinical diagnosis or working diagnosis is needed. If a clinical diagnosis is not made prior to referral, the appropriate diagnostics (relating to pain and dysfunction) will need to be obtained. This may include:

  • Radiographs and complete orthopedic examination under sedation.
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (+/- sedation).
  • Degenerative Myelopathy DNA testing when appropriate (owners encouraged to obtain test through UC Davis online).
  • Biochemical lab testing if sedation is required for diagnostics.

If you prefer for these procedures to be done in your hospital, please complete them prior to the referral appointment and send results to: rehab@ahdcvets.com.

Communication With Referring Veterinarians: What To Expect From Us In Return

After 48 hours, we will send you an initial evaluation report, patient problem list, goals and therapeutic plan. We will also send a follow-up report after every re-check evaluation (not rehab sessions) performed by Dr. Eckrenrode.

If you have any questions, please call us at 717-652-1270, option 4, ext. 4512. We love discussing cases with our referring veterinarians.

It is our policy to only provide veterinary services related to pain management and rehabilitation therapy. We will refer the client back to the primary veterinarian for any other health related services, diagnostics, products, etc.
